Prepping for a Spray Tan

The Best Do’s… and Do Not’s… to Get Flawless Color

Are you an avid spray tanner, or just a beginner? Well when it comes to spray tanning and the best prep for it, all the same rules apply. Some may think no prep is necessary, I mean after all you are just going to get solution sprayed onto your body to have to rinse it off in 8 hours, give or take, right? Not so much. There are a lot steps going into getting your skin soft and supple in order to get the solution to really settle onto your skin. The result of these steps yields a beautiful, flawless and natural looking tan.

First thing’s first, EXFOLIATE! Exfoliating your skin really well 24 hours prior to your spray tan appointment really sloughs off all those dead skin cells that are just hanging out on top of your skin. Well now’s the time to evict those little bad boys! Keeping them there will just produce an uneven and blotchy appearance once the spray tan solution is applied. What does it do after it settles? Causes your tan to fad unevenly and in the most unattractive, unnatural way. So whether you have an all-natural exfoliant at home or just good ol’ exfoliating body gloves, get to it! You and your baby soft skin will thank you afterwards.

Have some hair that needs to be taken away? Do all of that before your spray tan. If you are a regular waxer, be sure to get all of your waxing needs out of the way at least 48 hours prior to your spray tan appointment. Although you may not see it, waxing leaves an invisible residue on your skin that acts like a barrier between your skin and the spray tan solution (more on invisible residue enemies down the way). Waxing is a heaven sent, but be sure to get that hair pulled 48 hours before your appointment. Is waxing not your go-to for hair removal, but rather just good old fashion shaving, get that done at least 24 hours in advance with just some simple soap and water, avoid shaving creams.

Oh…there it is, that other invisible residue I was talking about…SOAP! I tell all my clients, “A clean dry body is best, no lotions, perfumes, deodorant or makeup.” All are really well at following those guidelines and doing just that, however what some don’t know is there are certain soaps that leave this invisible barrier on the skin. One which is famous for this in the spray tan world…Dove. Now don’t get me wrong, if there is a body soap I love, its Dove. Its smell and the way it leaves my body feeling so soft afterwards, can’t beat. However, when it comes to spray tans and this particular soap, well, let’s just say Cupid did not shoot them with his bow and arrow. So there you have it; exfoliate, remove unwanted hair, come into the studio with a clean, dry body (no lotions, perfumes, deodorant or makeup), all while keeping in mind the Dove soap and shaving cream blockers, and you’re good to go!
